Centro Cultural Vila Prudente

Who we are

Created in 1990 by Patrick Joseph Clarke (irish spiritan missionary), the Vila Prudente Cultural Center – VPCC, originally “House of Culture”, has catholic identity, the fruit of the Church´s work at the Ecclesiastical Base Communities and of the Liberation Theology.

Located at the Vila Prudente favela (slum), at the East zone of the city of São Paulo, the VPCC is “a piece of heaven amidst the world, that wants to declare that here one can dream. A sacred place that has the power of transforming anything. It is in this space that one can experiment the treasure of creativity within dance, theatre, music and singing, in the faith as fundamental and adventurous expression of the imaginary, in the irreductible art of playing with paint and paper and in the blessedness of being alive, free and full of grace.” *

Not a funeral home, a lighthouse!

The place destined for the VPCC was first conceived to be a funeral home, due to the frequent deaths occurred in the slums. But the idea was reformulated and in 1990 was born at the place a space destined for the promotion of citizenship through arts, cultural production and education.

Mission
